School wide IT systems

Hi everyone - 

I am looking for a school that uses a VPN for their staff and students. Currently, we have chromebooks for our older students (7th & 8th), but there are limitations (cannot save data on chromebooks, lacks JAVA). We are looking into ways we can have the best of both worlds. Would love to hear what types of school-wide IT systems you use and whether you feel a VPN is the answer to our issues.
