Voki In the Classroom

This week I decided to try something new by using the tool Voki. Voki allows you to create a personalized Avatar along with your own voice to create up to a sixty second message. In addition, you can choose a background or use a personal photo. Upgrades are available that would enable you to use Voki in the education setting.Voki can be used in a variety of ways. This can include reading fluency, ESL/ELL students who are just learning the language, or even as part of a larger project. When I…See More

Wikis in the Classroom

This week I have been focusing on using wikis in the educational setting. I had created a Wiki to use for my professional use, but I never considered of how I could use this in the classroom. In my research of educational wikis, I came across two wikis that I really enjoyed. The first one is located at http://bookleads.wikispaces.com. This wiki provides award winning books, suggested reading lists, and a variety of other subject areas geared towards…See More

Virtual Tools

Virtual environments are new to me, but this week I was able to experience Second Life. I first began underwater looking for treasures and had difficulties navigating and locating the treasures. I gave up on my first day and when I came back to it, I found it much easier. I was able to locate the hidden treasures and the big treasure at the end. I additionally explored four different worlds in Second Life. I explored Roma, Paris, Vasser Island, and Jokadyia. These areas were on land and enabled…See More

Visual Learning Tools

This week my class focused on visual learning tools that can be easily implemented into the classroom. I decided that since I have a ton of personal pictures that I would try to use those pictures to create a video.  I decided to use Animoto. Animoto enables me to use my own pictures and create short 30 second videos. You can upgrade for a small monthly charge to create longer videos, which I may do since I absolutely loved creating this project. I do not have a lot of time to create projects…See More

Social Networking in the Classroom

Social Networking in the ClassroomThis week the focus in my class has been on how to implement social networking into the classroom. Despite personally using popular social media, I struggled on how I could incorporate this tool into the classroom. I decided that I would try the Edmodo site located at http://www.edmodo.com. I not only connected with other YU educators, but did create a group for my 6th grade math students.I will begin using Edmodo this week…See More

Google Docs In the Classroom

This week I have been learning about various productivity tools. I was unaware of the vast amount of free tools that are available to not only utilize personally, but to utilize in the educational setting as well. My focus for this week was on Google Docs.I had very little exposure to this tool prior to this week. Google Docs is a free web-based office suite tool. Google Drive allows users to store, share, edit, or even email Google Docs to anyone you decide to share it with. Users can create…See More

Twitter in The Classroom

When I first read this week’s chapter on using Twitter in the classroom, I honestly have to say that I thought it was it was a far-fetched concept. I had never used Twitter myself personally so trying to figure out how this could possibly be used in the classroom was difficult for me. This week I first joined Twitter. I have also begun following a couple of people and even found a couple of co-workers who utilize Twitter as well. Just learning the basics of Twitter, I was able to begin to see…See More

Internet Safety

This week in my class we read about safety specifically related to technology. As I focused on Internet safety, I often wonder how other schools are monitoring safe Internet usage. I do random checks on student IPads, especially in our middle school. Even though I do this, I have caught students not using this piece of technology for its intended purpose. I restricted IPads so students are not able to delete without having the restrictions passwords. Now that students know this, I know that…See More
