The final two chapters in”Web 2.0 how-to for educators” are all about web tools and how they can be used. I am constantly amazing at how many available tools there are and about the many  tools I keep learning about,I it seems like everyday I learn about at least one new tool. In this chapter alone I have learned about 20 tools! Are all these tools new to me? If you see the list which includes skype, voki, voicethread, moodle, google earth…. the answer would quite obviously be no. But, have I…See More

60 web Tools in 60 MInutes

While scrolling through the demand sessions available from the 2011 ISTE Conference, I was struck by the first session, 60 in 60: 60 Web 2.0 Tools in 60 minutes. In this 60 minute session, Brandon Lutz was able to give a brief description of 60 Web tools. There are so many web tools out there, it’s hard to stay afloat and know about all of them. Depending on what your use and purpose is, some of these tools will change how you teach and live actually. I have heard of or used around half of…See More

Wikis- It's time to join!

While searching for the best platform to use to create my e-portfolio, many blog sites were mentioned along with wiki-spaces. When I looked into the wiki-space option the set up did not appeal to me and I didn’t think it was the proper platform for my use, even though it works for so many people. I am a very visual person and I did not find the layout of the wiki appealing. After having read the chapter about wikis, the advantages and multiple uses for it in the classroom, I have a new outlook…See More

Virtual Worlds

Venturing in to the virtual world of Second Life was definitely…an adventure. Do I think this is an adventure I can live without? I can confidently answer that question with a resounding yes! While the virtual world is amazing in it’s ability to create custom avatars, walk, run, fly, and visit all types of locations, it was a little bit to much for me, actually it frightens me. There are no limitation in this world as to where you can go or whom you can meet and talk to. Anyone can start a chat…See More

Windows Movie Maker

For all those PC users out there, I think Windows Movie Maker is a wonderful, free and easy to use tool. You can create anything from simple drag and drop slide-shows to more detailed and involved videos, which I have personally used numerous times at work. Whether approached to "quickly" create a slideshow of the days events or put together a school dinner video, I was able to create all types of videos with one program. If you are looking to create a quick, non-labor intensive slide-show, you…See More

Social Networking

I have purposely not gotten involved in the world social networking yet. I have personal concerns about signing up with these sites as I feel I will lose myself and I would rather not open up myself to that. Because of this fear, I haven't opened myself up to the idea of using social networks in the classroom. After reading the chapter on social networking however, I can recognize the benefits for older high school students, using such sites in class for assignments in English, Social Studies…See More

Productivity Tools- Zoho

When you really get down to it, there are tons of productivity options out there. Depending on what your purpose is and what you would like to achieve, there are a plethora of options available to you. At this point, most people know of or have at least heard of Google Docs and how helpful it is for collaborating and sharing work online. While Google Docs is great and has opened up a new world for many, I find that the formatting in Google Docs leaves what to be desired. In reading about…See More

Advantages of Podcasts/Vodcasts

For the past few months, I have been toying with the idea of creating videos or vodcasts/screencast for my classes. When my students come to the computer lab, they want to jump straight onto the computers. They have no interest in hearing long winded explanations of what they need to accomplish and how they need to go about it. After a few moments of listening, some of the students are already tuned out. This causes problems when they start working and have no clue as to what to do. Students…See More

Twitter- is it the right tool for you?

Around two weeks ago, I gave a lesson on social media to one of my 6th grade classes. Part of the assignment was to create similes about their digital lives. To be honest, I was surprised by how many students’ similes stated that the use of digital and social media was non-existent in their lives. Students who I thought spend many hours at home on the computers and with social media shocked me by stating the opposite.Twitter, like many social media tools and Web 2.0 tools have much to…See More

I recently had a student who refused to participate in the class assignment. The class had spent some time learning Microsoft Excel and this student did not see or understand the value in what the class was learning and why it was being taught in that fashion. When I tried questioning the student about his lack of interest and involvement he told me his father was an expert in Excel and he could teach him everything about it, he didn't need to do the class assignment nor learn it the way…See More
