One of the most common comments of teachers is that they are always looking for “toolboxes” to help them in a given situation. Whether it is how to deal with a certain difficult child or ways to…Continue

"Hi Eytan, I saw your post and wanted to respond. I feel your tension about using technology in the Judaic Studies classroom. I do think that the various technologies speak to the students on their level and it is what they live and breathe. On the…"

Faith Based Flipped Classroom?

I recently viewed a colleague giving a lesson in a flipped model. He made a video of himself reading and explaining the Gemara. He then had a worksheet that the students needed to complete on the topic which was also done on computer. This was given first at home as homework and then reinforced the next day in class. The lesson was absolutely remarkable and I thought the teacher did a masterful job. I have to say that I have never seen such diligence on the part of the students to complete the…See More

Is Technology Good for Education? - My Two Cents

The topic of the effectiveness of technology in education is one that has gotten a lot of attention, anywhere from this site to the publicity it received nationally due to the recent NY Times article. My recent parent teacher conference day led me to share my own thoughts on the matter. In completion of my YU Partnership Ed Tech Course of 2011, I undertook to create a wiki for my 6th grade Gemara classes. The wiki contained handouts that we did in class or that were assigned for homework, had…See More

Reflective Post-Ed-Tech To Me

I feel as if there is a whole new door that was opened to me recently known as educational technology. While I have used different tools over the years, I feel that I now have a more polished idea about what information is out there and more importantly how to look for it. I have been introduced to a peer group of similar minded people, educators who use technology to enhance their classroom learning. The introduction of yu20.org is an example of using the knowledge that I have attained in this…See More

Todaysmeet - Today, Tonight, Anytime

A wonderful way to continue the learning done in school is through a site called todaysmeet (www.todaysmeet.com). It is a simple way for a teacher to start a chat room for discussion among the students. It is very easy to set up and in only 4 quick steps the chat room is open. Once the students get the url of the site they can then join the conversation. It is so easy to use and those are really all of the steps involved. This can be used for reviewing…See More

So What's a Wiki?

I remember the first time I heard about wikis about 2 years ago. Someone told me the general idea and that it is being used in high schools. As a middle school teach, they told me it was up to us to introduce the students to this tool. I looked around a site about wikis and was somewhat confused as to what the goal of a wiki is. After all, is a wiki similar to a blog? Is there a real need for a wiki if I can use websites to gather info and Google Docs to collaborate on with others? While I am…See More

Second Life - Friend or Foe to Jewish Education

As one who had no previous knowledge of virtual environments, I did not know what to expect. I downloaded the software and was getting ready to go. I chose my avatar and started playing around. I felt like I was playing a video game and not doing any learning. It took a while to figure out how to work the site and I am still not 100% at it. It was sometimes difficult to maneuver around the site and find items of interest.I started doing some searches of different places to teleport to and began…See More

Visual Tools For the Visual Learner

Educators are always trying to teach toward any one of a number of different learning styles. One of the most common styles of learning is the visual learner. Through the ages teachers have been engaging students through this powerful tool. The blackboard had always been a very effective way to show the students material on the board and the good teacher was able to bring in an artifact to help enrich the learning. However, the technology revolution has ushered in a new wave of educational tools…See More

Back to Twitter

The use of social networking media is ever-growing. Just click on the following link to see how it is being used in a Republican Presidential candidate debate http://mashable.com/2011/06/13/cnn-gop-debate-social-media/I find the use of Twitter as a social networking site to be fascinating. In our times as the “disposable generation”, I find this tool to be most appropriate. When we move from one thing t the next so fast…See More

Google Apps - A Year in Review

After a year of teaching using Google Apps, I have some things to reflect on. I started off the year using the most basic app - the search engine. I explored with my students various ways to do research using the search engine, how to use it safely and how to use it efficiently. Next we played around with some of th e more fun ones like Maps and Google Earth. The students found their way through different cities and spanned the globe. On iGoogle, everyone personalized their homepage and found…See More
