Google Earth

I was very excited to be introduced to a new tool that I can use in my histroy classroom: Google Earth. I always knew about Google Earth, and I have used it countless times just for fun or entertainment, looking for my house, familiar or famous landmarks and the like. However, as I was reading about how to use it in the classroom, I realized it can be a very exciting educational tool as well, especially for me as a history teacher. When learning about the Palace of Versailles, I could have my…See More

My First Experience Using a Wiki

I recently used a wiki for the first time in my AP US Government class and it was definitely a positive experience. I am in the middle of a lesson on Congress and one of the topics is "How a Bill Becomes a Law", which involves several steps. As I was introduced to the idea of a wiki, I decided to try it out with this topic.I gave each of my students several handouts outline the steps for how a bill becomes a law. I then created a googledoc and titled it "How a Bill Becomes a Law." I wrote…See More

No Virtual Environments in My Classroom

Today I was introduced to Second Life, a world of virtual reality and hundreds of destinations one can choose to explore. I know that these destinations could be used as educational tools and I'm sure I can think of ways to incorporate them, but frankly I was quite repulsed from what I saw on Second Life. To me, it seemed to be a place that is used by most people to waste time and enter into a world of make-believe, an escape of some sort where people dream up their ideal look and personality…See More

The Exciting Possibilities Available When Using Visual Tools

Every week, I am introduced to new tools that open up new avenues for me as an educator. This week, I discovered a remarkable way to have my students tell the stories we learn about through digital storybooking online. I already have several ideas of assignments that I would like to give my students. For example, in my 9th grade history class, we are about to learn about the French Revolution, and at the end of the unit, I require my students to make a timeline of 10 important events, with a…See More

How I Have Benefited From Networking

Several years ago, I started to teach AP courses in the high school in which I work. I found teaching an AP course exhilerating and challenging. I knew that at the end of the year, my students would take a nationwide test over which I had no control and they would be compared with thousands of students across the county. My principals and the board members of my school were very involved and conscious of my students' scores and I knew I would be judged based upon them. And yet although I admit…See More

Using Vodcasts in My History Class

Whenever I heard about podcasts and vodcasts in the past, I envisioned using it as a way to lecture to my students outside of the classroom, whether as a homework assignment or as a tool for absent students. Truthfully, this idea did not really excite me as a tool to lecture my students. As I read up on how podcasts and vodcasts could be used in the classsroom, I realized that they could be used to incorporate a variety of creative ideas. One idea I thought of is having my students act as…See More

Research Projects and Blogging

As I will be assigning a research project for my 9th grade students with the start of the second semester, I am seeking out new ways to make this project as exciting and educational as possible. Many times, if not done properly, the projects can be a lot of "copy and paste" tidbits of information from the internet, without the students investing much effort, developing interest, or using critical thinking skills.I have just read about an innovative way to track student work through blogging…See More

Preventing Plagiarism with Turnitin

Hello Everyone,As a high school history teacher, I have given many research papers throughout the years. I have always tried to create assignments which excite my students and promote higher order thinking skills. Another one of my considerations is that the assignment be difficult to plagiarize and to prevent "copying and pasting" from the internet. One online resource which has really helped to alleviate this problem is Turnitin.com. I have used this online software in recent years to check…See More

Concept Maps As a Form of Assessment

In the last two years, the high school I work in has been growing at a very fast pace and the number of students in my class has been increasing. As I am used to teaching smaller classes, I became accustomed to having a very clear picture of how each of my students was fairing, whether they were understanding the lessons properly or working to their potential. As the class size grew, I felt I was not able to assess the progress of my students on a daily basis.         I recently came…See More
