Video revisited

YU2.0 FEATURED BLOGINNOVATION WEDNESDAYThinking about video and media literacy tonight. I just returned from accompanying my children to a school board meeting where they were part of group of students invited to lead the "Pledge of Allegiance."  During the meeting we had the opportunity to watch 2 book trailer videos which were made by 4th graders. SInce my children are 4th graders, I was mesmerized. The projects were awesome. Creative, well paced, engaging, and visually interesting...just…See More

Comedy or Disruption?

YU2.0 FEATURED BLOGED TECH MONDAYWhile watching a comedy show last night, I was amused and amazed by how well Louis C. K. described the interaction of education and technology from a parent’s perspective. His story was about how parents let their digital devices – cameras, phones, and even IPads – get in the way of actually watching their children. It was the prom and he was chaperoning from the sidelines as dozens of parents stuck a device in front of their faces to capture the moment…See More

Too Cool for School?

YU2.0 FEATURED BLOGED TECH MONDAY One of the many issues swirling around in my head lately has been how to balance what I call “the cool toy factor” with the issue of creating the best learning environments for students. And that “s” on environments is intentional. Each group of students – maybe each student – needs a special learning environment. The “one size fits all” form of education never really worked, and it’s even less viable for our students than it was for us.Ed tech pundits love to…See More

Video evolution

Several years ago, one of our teachers shot video of his lectures. He saved them on our school's server, planning to use them for absent students or for times when he might be absent. Rather than relying on a sub to figure out his lesson plans, he wanted to ensure that his lessons were taught in the way he wanted them taught. "Flipping the classroom" was unheard of at that time, so the whole idea mystified many staff members. Even me. Reflecting on it, I applauded his effort, but our IT guy was…See More

Who defines literacy?

Somewhere back in the 1800s, there must have been a teacher pacing around her one-room classroom lamenting the new technology — chalkboards — that was going to be the ruination of education. Children writing on the wall — that’s just crazy!! Last week, I walked into a professional development session and, I’m sad to report, was hit in the face with an English/Language Arts teacher ranting about how “video” games are the reason that children don’t read. To be fair, the session did improve, but I…See More
