Twitter VS Edmodo for PLC

We have been focusing on technology for our professional development this year.  We have been blessed to have recently received a total of 225 IPads as a donation to our school.  This past week, at our professional development, Rabbi Tavi Koslowe gave an IPad 101 class to get the teachers started on how to use them in their classrooms.  As part of the presentation Rabbi Koslowe shared with the teachers a list of links that would be helpful to them in general in their classrooms and…See More

Diigo

I don’t know if any of you have tried Diigo for doing research with your classes.  We have been working in grades 6-8 on building research skills with meaningful assignments that require students to delve deep and not superficially into a topic.  Part of this obviously requires students to research a lot online.  This can be incredibly frustrating when students are working on lap tops, school computers, home computers etc.  It is even more frustrating when working with a group.  You can…See More

Blended learning

We have been using a blended learning environment for a full unit now in a 6th grade mathematics class.  In our blended learning environment, the teacher is teaching the concept and the practice and assessment is happening in an online environment.  I joined the class to be a part of a class meeting where the students had a chance to share with the teacher what they like and don't like about this method of learning.  Below are some of the highlights...............What we like about blended…See More

Blogging, the good and the bad............

We have begun to use blogging in many different areas of learning in the middle school.  I see so many positives to it.  Some teachers are using it in a similar way they would have used journaling in the past.  They use it as a way for students to become metacognitive/ reflective about how they are learning or what they are learning.  We have also seen how it builds a collaborative learning environment as students and teachers respond to each other with comments or questions.  One negative is…See More

For those who are trying to educate students about the impact of cyberbullying........... this is a very powerful and short video that could be a great discussion starter. We used it in our advisory for 6th and 7th grade.

Best Practices

Often, when speaking to friends or relatives who work in thepublic school system, I will be asked how our school’s test scores were thispast year.  Thank Gd, our students dobeautifully on the standardized tests we administer each year for grades 2 – 7.  In their public school world, the scores onthe state tests often drive much of their instruction.  We in private school are able to focus onusing multiple means of assessment that gives us much data to drive ourinstruction.  We just gave a…See More

Zamzar and dipity, two web 2.0 tools

Posted on April 2, 2012 at 8:30pm 0 Comments

At our last professional development, focused on technology, Rabbi Tavi Koslowe shared some of his favorite Web 2.0 tools.  You can click on this link to his Gemara Blog to see the full list with links;

Out of the ones he shared, I really love zamzar which is a file conversion service.  I am always so annoyed when a student sends me a file that cannot be opened on my computer.  Often when students…

Using Technology to Learn History like a Historian

Posted on April 2, 2012 at 8:30pm 0 Comments

I just watched a session from the ISTE conference called “Tra-Digital History: Bringing History Alive!”.  It was about using technology to teach students history.  The big goal of the use of technology by this teacher is to teach students to think and learn about history the way historians do.  When I first learned about blended learning, I thought it meant using online programs/curricula to teach the content of your subject area. I have learned that it means using technology in any form…

Second Life

We were asked to join Second Life and explore its virtual world.  Many of the participants in the course were uncomfortable with it.  When I first saw this a few weeks ago, it intrigued me.  How much fun would it be to create an identity and interact with other online identities?  My children used to love Webkinz which is a similar forum for children where you get a stuffed animal and put in a code.  You create your house etc.  Then after that we had a parent evening with a psychologist who…

Voicethread for Shared Reading

Posted on March 26, 2012 at 10:04pm 0 Comments

After trying out voice thread a few times, I saw a lot of potential of using voicethread for shared reading experiences in English, especially poetry.  We have an English Department meeting on Wednesday during which we are working to review our reading curriculum.  As part of this, the teachers also share ideas and brainstorm about how to fine tune their reading instruction.  Using a poem and guiding questions from each grade’s English teacher I put together short shared reading experiences…
