Just Do It--But How?

Started this discussion. Last reply by Naava Frank Oct 29, 2012. 1 Reply

I took the leap last week.  I can’t believe I did it, but I did.  What did I do—I became a facilitator—a guide on the side—and it felt so good.  I was so pumped, that I ran into my principal’s office…Continue

Like a Kid in a Candy Shop!

This week's blog was difficult. Not because I didn't know what to write but because there is so much to write!  When I looked at the smorgasbord of tools at the beginning of this chapter I recognized very few. How many did I use in my classroom?  Well, last year I had a student who moved to another state and this year several of her classmates asked me to download Skype on my classroom laptop so we could talk to her once in a while. That was cool. I have heard ofGoogle Earth but I still am…See More

Using Wikis to Teach About the Holocaust in Middle School

I've been struggling to understand how wikis work.  As I have finally come to learn, it is a tool that can be used in one of two ways.  First, wikis can be used to help students go deeper in classroom topics.  The teacher can post links to sources which augment and/or support learning.  Second, wikis can also be collaborative tools used to help students construct meaning on any given topic. I immediately began to see how I could use wikis when I teach units on the Holocaust.…See More

Second Life Is No Life for Day School Students

I have been teaching in a day school for the better part of 20 years.  It is a place of kedusha, ritual, halacha, morality, a safe harbor from the assault of the outside world.  I firmly believe that Second Life has no place in the Jewish day school. For the very brief time I spent there, it was a place of vulgarity and crudeness. It took me a very long time to find an avatar I would be comfortable with.  Even though I found one dressed in long sleeves and a skirt, she looked like and moved…See More

Playing in the Sandbox

It's Monday and I am on a high.  I am so pumped.  I think I'm finally getting it.  I've spent a ton of time reading about so many tools and I want to try them all!  Rabbi Wex, you are so right, I had forgotten how much fun it is to play in the sandbox. My first success came early this morning when my IT Teacher showed me how to use Animoto. I went back to class and within five minutes I had created my first video. Me, all by myself, no hand holding.  I was so excited.  Now my creative juices…See More

Growing from Social Networking

I was extremely anxious as I tried to figure out how to complete the assignments related to this chapter on social networking.  My day school is trying to use technology in a very thoughtful and cautious way.  We use a social networking site called Edline.  There, parents and students can check in on grades, nightly homework assignments, long-term assignments, links to useful websites for the class, and links to classroom videos and pictures that teachers have posted. (Our site is evaluated by…See More

Being Productive!

Productivity ToolsThis past week has been filled with lots of Educational Technology for me.  First, I am excited to be taking my teaching to the next level as I plan on integrating technology into a really dry World History chapter---facts in-facts out.  I have spoken with my colleague and our IT Coordinator to plan out this next unit of study.  Secondly, having just finished teaching about the Ancient Times through the Middle Ages, I shared a really good video about Jewish Life in the Middle…See More

"That's One Small Step..."

When I first started this on-line journey, Rabbi Wex explained to us that we would be learning when to use educational technology not how.  So at first, I felt like the kid at the Passover Seder who didn't know what to ask!  Not only did I have to learn how, but also when, so that I could fully appreciate all of the tools at my disposal. With every new unit of study I now ask myself when I could use technology to enhance student learning.I just started a "country scrapbook" with my sixth grade…See More

Some Ideas on How to Use Twitter in a Social Studies classroom

After reading my text book about Twitter and watching several YouTube videos to get a basic idea of how it works, I decided to ask the real experts:  my students! They know I am taking an on-line class to learn about technology and have been very supportive.  I asked them if they use Twitter and almost to a student they all told me it was a waste of time.  The only people who use it, they claim, are interested only in following Hollywood stars or sports players. Hum, lots of room to grow! But…See More

Wiki-Leaks, Rupert Murdock, and Me!

Since I started this course I have been very mindful of trying to integrate education technology in as many areas of the curriculum as possible.  I am enjoying learning, along with my students, how to use new programs to advance the cause of their education.  I get tickled watching students figure out how a program works and then coming to the front of the room to explain it to their classmates (and me!). And then I started reading about safe, legal, and ethical use of technology.  I wasn’t…See More
