What's All the Noise About?

What is all the noise about? So, a cloud used to be the thing in the sky that blocked the sun and sprinkled rain on us, ie nimbus, cumulus, etc.  Now it is the amorphous “place” where our data and applications are stored…it is accessible from anywhere and everywhere…though we have not idea where that actually is. Tweet, tweet…used to be the sounds a bird made on a sunny, spring afternoon.  Now it is thousands of short messages (no more than 140 characters each) that provide tidbits of…See More

"What age group do you teach using vodcasts and a flipped classroom model?  Do you find that students actually view the lectures at home?  Do you see this as a useful model in any other subjects, aside from math?"

ePals Novice

While I created a blog using blogger (and am posting this entry on that site), I have also started exploring ePals, a blogging and communications tool specifically designed for students and teachers.  I have just registered as a teacher and have stated my goal as seeking connections for:1)   Students in my school who are virtual learners.  We have a core of about ten students who are taking virtual elective courses to supplement their core curriculum of face-to-face courses.  The students are…See More

Plagiarism and Turnitin

Given the plethora of information available online, teachers are constantly faced with the challenge of finding meaningful assignments that force students to think for themselves rather than just retrieve and spit back information from the internet.  Many assignments that used to require a great deal of time and effort, are now easily researched online.  Students no longer have to write their assignments by hand and can cut, paste and rearrange information with the click of a mouse. This…See More

"Our school is not yet doing this, but we are very interested in exploring the possibility.  There is some concern about using online classes for Judaic Studies, as an important element of these classes is the student-teacher relationship that…"

Setting up a Class Blog or Webpage for Parents

Does anyone have experience on using technology to keep parents informed of goings on in the classroom?  I am not talking about progress reports or grades, but rather information on what topics are being studied each week and what kinds of discussions parents and students can have at home to support in-school learning.  I would love to get feedback on this topic. Our school has a homework management system that allows teachers to post assignments for parents to view, but it has been a challenge…See More

Timetoast: Terrific Web 2.0 Tool

Posted on May 12, 2012 at 8:46pm 0 Comments

A picture is worth a thousand words and an interactive timeline is priceless!  There is no better way to give students an overview of a period in history than through the creation of an interactive timeline.

Creating a Timetoast account is quick and simple.  Once you have an account it is VERY easy for a teacher to search for already published timelines that might be relevant to a lesson.

When searching timelines related to…

Second Life Takes Years off Mine!

Posted on May 12, 2012 at 8:19pm 0 Comments

Well, in case you couldn't guess from the title, I have been experimenting with the virtual world of Second Life and have come away with a few conclusions.  First of all, I feel like a dinosaur.  The frustration level of not knowing what to do and how to navigate the various 'worlds' makes me feel like my mother must have felt when they introduced electric typewriters.  The frustration built as I realized that my kids or the students in my school would probably be able to figure it all out…

Wikis: PBWorks Works!

Posted on April 10, 2012 at 7:49pm 0 Comments

I used PB Works to set up a wiki for US History students at our school.  My hope is that students will use this wiki beginning next year in order to complete a comprehensive project on the US Presidents.  This project will be a required project as part of the US History curriculum across the boards – students at all levels will participate in this project and the end results will be shared with the entire school.  In the future, this project could also be set up as a group project which…
