Blended learning and Social Constructivism

      YU2.0 FEATURED BLOG

INNOVATION WEDNESDAY

When Jean Piaget (1896-1980) theorized on Social Constructivism, the world was much simpler and smaller. Piaget's theory of constructivism argues that we produce knowledge and form meaning based upon our experiences. As a psychologist,…

Plan Ahead

YU2.O FEATURED BLOG

INNOVATION WEDNESDAY

In college, after declaring myself a computer science major, I spent way too many hours in the computer lab drawing and re-drawing the flow charts for the complex algorithms. I learned the hard way the importance of planning ahead. As my blended course…

Collaboration Fluency: Creating a 21st Learning Environment

I am sure you have heard a lot of talk about 21st Century Learning environments and collaboration fluency.  I am also sure that you have heard that all of this is very important in the future of education.  But have you been told why all of this is important?

The following blog post is a summary and reflection of a presentation given by Lee Crockett at ISTE 2011 in Philadelphia, PA.  The title of the presentation is …

Blend, Flip, and Innovate - 21st Century Jewish Learning: How to assure e-learners are not nodding off

FEATURED BLOG

One of the difficulties skeptics have with blended/online learning is the fact that the learning takes place outside the walls of the traditional classroom.  Traditional synchronous learning occurs when two or more people are communicating in real time (live).  They could be sitting in the classroom, talking on…

Edmodo Rocks!

Edmodo (http://www.edmodo.com/) is a free, safe, closed and private classroom community that brings students together.  Edmodo was founded in 2008 and as of September, 2012 it has reached a milestone of over 10-million users.  Edmodo allows teachers to create closed, safe groups that can allow students (and parents) to join their virtual classrooms.   As a technology coordinator at a Jewish day school I was so pleased to know that no private information…

From So. Flo. to San Fran. - The Impact of a PLN

Last night at around 6:30PST and 9:30EST something unique and exciting happened. I had the opportunity to lead a PD session with a cohort of Religious School educators from area congregational schools in San Francisco. You may be asking yourself "did he really fly all the way to the West Coast just to turn around and fly back in time to deliver finals to his classes in South Florida 9 hours later?" Not exactly. But with a little pre-thought and pre-planning, tools like …

KHAN ACADEMY--PART TWO

I've now expanded my research for this course assignment beyond Khan Academy, and have learned that the term "flipped classroom" is not original to Khan.  It seems that around 2005 various people began advancing the notion of video lectures. Since every American educational idea gets product-branded before it gets a theory or articulated practice, it comes as no surprise that in those early days various names vied for preeminence, most notably "blended learning" and "reverse instruction."…

Blended learning

We have been using a blended learning environment for a full unit now in a 6th grade mathematics class.  In our blended learning environment, the teacher is teaching the concept and the practice and assessment is happening in an online environment.  I joined the class to be a part of a class meeting where the students had a chance to share with the teacher what they like and don't like about this method of learning.  Below are some of the highlights...............

What we like about…

Is Technology Good for Education? - My Two Cents

The topic of the effectiveness of technology in education is one that has gotten a lot of attention, anywhere from this site to the publicity it received nationally due to the recent NY Times article. My recent parent teacher conference day led me to share my own thoughts on the matter.

In completion of my YU Partnership Ed Tech Course of 2011, I undertook to create a wiki for my 6th grade Gemara classes. The wiki contained handouts that we did in class or that were assigned…

A challenge to online learning

A piece on the OpEd page of today's LA Times offered a somewhat jaundiced view of online learning.  While acknowledging its potential, especially for students who might have little or limited access to learning, the author points out that, at least as often constituted today, online learning may offer an insubstantial environment compared to a live classroom.  I actually think that he missed the most important point: part of the job of a teacher is to work with the student to tease out his…

I'm a visual learner

"I was always more of a visual learner" is one of the most common comments i get from parents and teachers when discussing students. It seems that even though there are many different kinds of learners (kinesthetic, auditory, sensory etc) most people respond well to visual learning. that's why its more imperative than ever to employ visual tools in the classroom. Judaic teachers in schools across the country are realizing that when lesson planning they must integrate a visual learning tool…

Seeing through the eyes of another. The "Nalaga’at" Center. (JJFF #8)

Another amazing day on the JJF Fellowship Israel retreat. In fact, I feel a bit guilty that I have not been blogging about every aspect of the different days as there have been so many memorable experiences. For example, today we began with a presentation from Rabbi Seth Farber, Ph.D.. Rabbi Farber is the founder and director of ITIM, The Jewish Life Information Center which is “dedicated to making Jewish life accessible to all” by fighting… Continue
