I have enjoyed technology for a long time, ever since the appearance of the first Apple computers. I have sought ways to incorporate this exciting technology into my Judaic classes. With the availability of Wi Fi in our school and the abundance of iPads and lab tops new opportunities have emerged. I am super excited about the possibilities and I look forward to this course to help me explore new ways to incorporate the technologies in a meaningful way into my classes. I am primarily focusing on my Chumash Bemidbar class which I teach to a wonderful group of 7th grade boys.
In preparation for their study of this Sefer, they had to get acclimated to the desert. They had to get a detailed map of the terrain of the Sinai, learn about the amount of rain fall and other water resources available. Research the native fauna and determine which of those are kosher. They were required to learn about the highest and lowest temperatures and any other possible elements that might make life in the desert challenging. They then had to research the amount of water and calories that a person needs to consume on a daily basis in order to survive under those conditions.
This exercise, which they thoroughly enjoyed, was designed to enable them to appreciate the miraculous nature of the journey through the desert.

Comment by Stephanie Arenas on October 14, 2012 at 8:41pm WOW. I teach Bamidbar too, to 6th graders and I think they would love doing some of the things you mentioned. I will try to incorporate some that this year. Do you have a lesson plan or assignment sheet that you give to them? is there any way you can get that to me? My email address is stephanie.pliskin@gmail.com.
Another interesting thing I do for Bamidbar is having the kids keep a journal of their time in the desert. First, they decorate the front cover with a desert seen. Then, they pick a name, a shevet (tribe) and family members to write about. They write of their experiences while walking and then reactions to certain events and experiences like, the blessing of the Kohanim, getting the mana, the heat, and the like. They love this assignment and some students get really creative with it.
