I recently read a great article on the need for a more modern computer class. As we all know, classical computer courses given in a high school setting focus heavily on productivity tools (Word, excel etc.), and the like which most of our students know well enough to succeed in a college environment, but focus minimally on social media, Web 2.0 tools etc, which is the future and where our world is heading.
So Ive decided to work on a curriculum for an online class that I plan on teaching in the near future, and I would like to hear your opinions on the matter as well as more ideas of what you think should be included in this class. It would be geared towards seniors (for now) since they would be leaving for college soon and would benefit the most from such a class.
Here are a few topics that I have thought up of so far:
- The power of social media (both in school and at work) and creating a PLN
- How to fully utilize search engines in general and Google in particular
- Digital Citizenship
- Knowing how and when to use online resources (i.e. Wikipedia blogs, etc.)as part of their research into a specific topic (many students really believe that everything posted online is true!)
-How to create and utilize blogs
-The concept of the Cloud
Thanks for the input!
